During Labour Day commemorations in Letlhakane, President Advocate Duma Boko placed a clear number on a problem that has long been visible but insufficiently quantified: it will take approximately P7 billion to bring Botswana’s public schools up to minimum acceptable standards. The figure, drawn from a comprehensive nationwide needs assessment, is significant not only for its size, but for what it represents, a system that has, over time, fallen behind the basic conditions required for effective teaching and learning.

President Advocate Duma Boko has announced that all schools across the country will be refurbished as part of government efforts to improve public infrastructure. Speaking during the National Cleanup Campaign in Gaborone on March 14, President Boko said government had established a special company that would be responsible for the refurbishment and maintenance of schools and teachers’ residences.

Today our team, alongside the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, held a consultative session with BOTSWANA SECTORS OF EDUCATORS TRADE UNION (BOSETU). The session was led by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, CEO of EIMC, President of BOSETU, Secretary General of BOSETU and representatives of the Botswana Teachers’ Union (BTU).
